ZenOne, electronic music DJ and producer

DJ & Producer · Techno · Psytrance · Trance

I make hypnotic techno, trance and psytrance. Some of it is for a peak-time room. Some of it makes more sense on headphones with your eyes closed. I like the space between those two.

I started DJing in the Los Angeles underground in the late 1980s. ZenOne is where that history landed.

The Catalog

Both Eclipse mixes are out now - the Radio Edit and the Original Mix. After that, Anamorph arrives in October, Noctilume in November and Coherence across late November and December. Everything released so far, including The Signal Is Love, Astradive, Hypnospire, Dimensual, Meridian and Orbital Collapse, lives in the full catalog, with every streaming and store link in one place.

Upcoming Releases

Coherence is about being close to someone without disappearing into them. A three-note phrase and a four-note phrase stay separate for most of the track, then join as one seven-note hook. I say “Not less of me” alone. Wendy joins me for “more of us.”

The Story

ZenOne, DJ and producer

I started DJing in Los Angeles in the late 1980s - clubs, warehouses, desert parties, later radio. I spent a long time listening, collecting and playing before I started releasing my own music as ZenOne.

The music moves between hypnotic techno, trance and psytrance. I like rolling low end, repetition and arrangements that take their time. Behind the decks I'd rather let a groove develop than reset the room every few minutes.

I've opened the official Gareth Emery x LSR/CITY Cyberpunk Tour afterparty at August Hall in San Francisco, played a pre-sunrise set at Lotus Moon Gathering and held recurring nights at Dead Ringer Analog Bar.

I got curious enough about trance to write a book about it. Euphoria Unleashed goes into the history, how the music is built and the research around what it does to us as listeners. I also write ZenOne Music about what I'm learning while making and playing this stuff.

I want to know why a sound works, not just whether it works. That's probably the thread I keep following.

Sets usually run 60-180 minutes. I'd rather give a groove time to develop than reset the room every few minutes.
